Useful tips on doing genealogy research::
These links are very helpful and all genealogy hobbyists should read [especially if
you research the same lines I do]...you will learn good tips and learn to be more
responsible with data you share
Links to helpful databases, libraries, resources or
records online that I've found useful for research::
- Census
Online and Census Links
has compiled links to what censuses are available on line.
- Search Rootsweb's Ftp Server
- Do a site search of
all of Rootswebs files
- Illinois State Archives has some good databases if you need to
research in Illinois
- Family
Search - a rare one that has the 1880 census and it's free
- Cyndi
has tons of links too, I remember when she only had a few pages, this lady's been
collecting genealgoy links for years.
- American Indian Genealogy - this site has alot of resource links for
researching American Indians, the only problem is the page is LOUD, not music wise, I mean
you get dizzy after awhile looking at it, ugliest page I've ever seen. You may want
to do like me, I saved the page to my hard drive and removed the background and changed
the purple font so I could read it.
- Links to list of
names - more great resource links
- Soundex Calculator - you need to use this before looking through
census indexes at the library and if you go to NARA
Genealogy Section you'll get an understanding of how the soundex is figured
- Cemetery Finder - if your going on a genealogy trip try this handy
tool.
- Bureau of
Land Management - search through land patents
- Social Security Death Index - I remember when it cost only $7.00 to
order one of these applications, for some reason they decided to put a 2 in front of the 7
and make it $27.00 now to order one which is ridiculous. But you can still get dates
from the SSDI.
- USGenweb State Links - you can find alot of good resources and online
records through some of the states.
- Ancestor
Hunt - theres alot of good links here although some lead to ancestry.com which you
have to pay to see.
- Census
Diggins - some more good resources
My Shopher Kin: links to relatives sites listed
alphabetically::
Non-Shopher researchers that may have you in their
database:: (These are links to sites that I've seen and can't tell why they have
Shopher in the files some are just because of spouses of a Shopher, but some have no
ancestry up or descendants down)- Does someone have you in there? ::
Here's some other sites I created and maintain for myself
and my husband:
I have other sites I work on as well and will add them as
well....soon
